Oakland is the seventh largest city in the State of California also being recognized as one of the most diverse cities in America. Partners is supporting work in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) at 3 high schools (Castlemont High School, Fremont High School, McClymonds High School), and 2 middle schools (Frick Middle School, West Oakland Middle School on designing 3-phase implementation plans for their board approved Re-Design.

In OUSD, 73.4% of the students are economically disadvantaged. The student population is diverse and includes 29.7% African American, 13.9% Asian, 39.3% Latino, 11.8% and 2.4% White students. The most recent results from the OUSD district-wide balance scorecard illustrate the critically low scores of students proficient in state academic standards. Only 28% of students in OUSD met or exceeded the SBAC ELA standard, with 23% meeting or exceeding the standards in SBAC Math.

Partners supported me with the implementation of our vision for RISE Community School. They kept me focused on the end result – making sure that all of our students become proficient readers and thinkers.
